There are several instances where you may need to obtain a Certificate of Status for your corporation. This one-page document serves as confirmation that the corporation is active, as of the day the certificate is issued.

What’s The Difference Between a Certificate of Status, Certificate of Good Standing and Certificate of Compliance?

Depending on which jurisdiction you’re obtaining this document from, it is known as one of these 3 names, Certificate of Status, Certificate of Good Standing or Certificate of Compliance. In Quebec, this is called Certificat d’attestation, and is only available in French. Regardless of which jurisdiction you’re obtaining this certificate from, each variance of this document provides the same information, whether the existing corporation is active or not.

This Certificate can only be obtained from the home jurisdiction of a corporation, regardless of where else it may be registered. For example, a Federal corporation that is also registered in Ontario, can only obtain the Federal Certificate of Compliance

How Long Is A Certificate of Status Valid?

If this document has been requested, whether it be from a bank, professional governing body, or other entity, they are typically looking for a Certificate that’s no more than 60 days old. You can check with the individual requesting the document to see their specifications for how long they consider the Certificate to be valid for.
