Is the OCN Number & BN Number the Same in Ontario?

comparing OCN and BN numbers for your corporation

When registering or managing a business in Ontario, you’re likely to come across a few different identification numbers—most commonly the Ontario Corporation Number (OCN) and the Business Number (BN). While they might seem similar, they serve very different purposes and come from different levels of government. Understanding the difference can help you avoid delays with your banking, tax accounts, and government filings.

What is an OCN Number?

  • Stands for Ontario Corporation Number
  • Issued by the Province of Ontario
  • Assigned automatically when you incorporate a business provincially
  • This number is used in filings with the Ontario Business Registry, including renewals, amendments, and annual returns
  • It is typically a 7-digit number
  • Used for identification within Ontario only

The OCN number never changes. If you file any updates to your corporation—such as:

  • A corporate name change
  • A Notice of Change (officer or address updates)
  • Your annual return
  • Or add a trade name under the corporation

The OCN number remains the same throughout the lifetime of your corporation. It is the consistent, permanent identifier for your Ontario corporation.

What Is a BN Number?

  • Stands for Business Number
  • Issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
  • A 9-digit number that identifies your business with the federal government
  • Required to set up tax accounts such as:
    • GST/HST
    • Payroll
    • Import/export
    • Corporate income tax (T2)

You can have one BN number and multiple program accounts (like GST/HST and Payroll) under that number.

Are the OCN & BN the Same?

No—they are not the same number, and they are issued by different authorities:

  • OCN = Provincial identifier (Ontario)
  • BN = Federal identifier (CRA)

You may need both when operating a business in Ontario, depending on the type of entity and the tax programs you’re registered for.

When Will You Need Each Number?

You might be asked for your:

  • OCN: When filing changes to your corporation or submitting an annual return.
  • BN: When registering for taxes, opening a business bank account, or dealing with the CRA.

Some applications or platforms (like QuickBooks or government portals) will specifically ask for one or the other—so it’s important to know which number to provide.
