When you incorporate a company in Ontario, your corporation is automatically registered under its legal corporate name. However, whether you also need to register a business name depends on how you plan to operate. If you intend to use a name that is different from your corporation’s full legal name, an additional business name registration—often called a tradename is required. This guide explains when a business name registration is necessary for an incorporated company, when it isn’t, and how to decide the right setup for your business.
Do I Need to Register a Business Name if I’ve Incorporated?
It depends on how you plan to operate your business.

You do not need to register a separate business name if:
- You are operating using your exact legal corporate name
- The name used publicly matches the corporation name in full, including the legal ending (Inc., Ltd., Corp.)
You do need to register a Trade Name if:
- You want to operate under a shortened version of your corporate name
- You want to use a brand name that differs from the legal corporate name
- You plan to operate multiple brands under one corporation
What Happens Automatically When I Incorporate?
When you incorporate in Ontario:
- Your corporation is registered under its legal name
- You receive Articles of Incorporation
- The corporation can operate under that exact name immediately
This registration alone allows you to do business only under the full legal corporate name.
What is a Business Name (Tradename) Under a Corporation?
A business name (often referred to as a trade name) allows an incorporated company to operate under a name other than its legal corporate name.
For example:
- Legal name: ABC Consulting Solutions Inc.
- Operating name: ABC Consulting
In this case, the operating name must be registered separately as a business name under the corporation.

Can an Incorporated Company Have More Than One Business Name?
Yes. An incorporated company can register multiple business names, each operating under the same corporation.
Each business name:
- Is registered separately
- Is valid for 5 years
- Must be renewed independently (our office will send reminder emails when renewal is required)
- Does not replace the corporation’s legal name
This is common for companies with multiple brands, services, or divisions.
Do Business Names Under a Corporation Provide Name Protection?
No. A business name registered under a corporation:
- Does not provide exclusive name protection
- Does not prevent others from registering similar names
- Is not the same as incorporation
Name protection comes from incorporation, not from business name registration.
Do I Need to Register a Business Name Right Away?
Not necessarily. You only need to register a business name before you start using it publicly.
This includes:
- Invoices
- Contracts
- Marketing materials
- Websites or social media
- Bank accounts under that name
If you’re only using your legal corporate name, no additional registration is required.
Common Mistakes We See
Some common points of confusion include:
- Thinking incorporation automatically covers all business names
- Using a shortened or branded name without registering it
- Confusing a business name registration with incorporation
- Forgetting to renew a business name under a corporation
