Why Can’t I Change My Business Name on a Business Name Registration (BNR)

It’s natural for a business to grow, shift focus, or rebrand over time—and often, that means wanting to change the business name. However, if you’ve registered your business as a Sole Proprietorship, General Partnership, Trade Name, or Limited Partnership in Ontario, you might have discovered that you can’t simply update the name. In fact, the Ontario system doesn’t allow for changes to the business name on a Business Name Registration (BNR) once it’s filed.

So what do you do instead? In this blog, we’ll explain why name changes aren’t allowed, what your options are, and how Ontario Business Central can help make the transition easy.

amending a business name

Quick Summary: Can I Change My Business Name on a BNR?

  • ❌ You can’t amend a business name once it’s registered under a Sole Proprietorship, General Partnership, Trade Name, or Limited Partnership.
  • ✅ You can cancel the existing name and register a new one.
  • ✅ Ontario Business Central will help you retrieve your Company Key, cancel, and register a new name in one seamless process.

Why You Can’t Change a Business Name on a BNR

Once a Business Name Registration is submitted and approved, it becomes a fixed record in the Ontario Business Registry. There is no amendment process available to update or modify the name itself.

This applies to:

  • Sole Proprietorships
  • General Partnerships
  • Trade Names under a Corporation or General Partnership
  • Limited Partnerships (LPs)

If you want to operate under a new name, you’ll need to cancel the existing registration and file a new one. This ensures all public records remain accurate and legally consistent.

What You Can Do Instead

Cancel the Existing Registration

You’ll need to cancel the current BNR. This process is simple and does not require a reason or signature. If you don’t have your Company Key, we can help retrieve it to complete the cancellation.

Register a New Business Name

After cancellation, you can register a New Business Name that better reflects your business going forward. We even offer a tool to check name availability and domain options at the same time.

Add a Second Business Name

If you want to keep your current name active but begin operating under a new brand, any of the registered businesses including Sole Proprietors, General Partnerships, Trade Names or Limited Partnerships can register a second business name without cancelling the first.

What About Incorporated Businesses?

In contrast to BNRs, incorporated businesses can change their name through a formal process called Articles of Amendment. When the name change is approved, the original name becomes inactive and the new name is reflected across all legal records.
