When you register your business in Ontario, you’ll receive a Master Business Licence with a registered business number. Registration in Ontario allows you to operate a business, open a bank account, use a business name for marketing materials, etc. The Ontario Business Names Act states that you must register your business name if you operate under any name other than your legal name.
Ex: If your name is Julie Smith, you can operate under the business name ‘JULIE SMITH’ without registering, but if you operate under anything other than your full legal name, such as ‘JULIE’S HAIRSTYLING’, you must register.
This type of business registration in Ontario is known as a Master Business Licence, and a registered Master Business Licence is valid for 5 years. Before the end of the 5-year term, you are required to renew your license in order to keep the business active.
